Is Self-Taping a Waste of Time? How to Get Noticed by Casting Directors.

Self-Taping isn't a waste of time, however it does require time, and lots of it too. Q. "I feel like I'm sending these self-tapes into a black hole. Is there even any point in doing them if I'm not getting the job?" A. We hear you and we understand your creative concerns. The fact is, the opportunity to self-tape can also be viewed as a brilliant chance to be considered for the next chance to self-tape too. Bookings happen through consistency, following the casting instructions & familiarity. So, it is true, as talent, we are also our own business, and yes, as cliché as it may sound, being our own business is a mindset. See how we can help to improve your next Self-Tape here.

Self-Tape Success: Why Casting Directors Book Some Actors Over Others.

Q. Why does it feel like some actors just 'get' it and others don't? What is the 'it factor' that makes a Casting Director actually trust you with a role? A. It can be so easy to over complicate it, because talent are usually so focused on getting what ever 'it' is, right. The Casting Director just wants to get to know us, that's the 'IT' right there. Although the Casting Director may not always be at liberty to tell us immediately that a booking on this occasion probably isn't realistic, they want us to keep working towards it. Consider the 'it' like a job interview, because it's not about over complicating it, it's about giving the employer an opportunity to learn more about us. Once we've achieved this, the sign that we've done our job will be in the next self-tape invitation received by our agent, or directly if we're freelance. The more we do our job well, the more the Casting Director will call our agent with another invitation to self-tape. This can be a huge confirmation that we aren't complicating 'it' anymore, in-fact, we're now moving closer to a booking. Speak with us TODAY.

Why Modern Self-Tapes Require the Same Skills as In-Person Auditions

Q. How do classic acting skills translate to the modern self-tape process? A. Many actors worry that traditional advice, like the techniques shared by Samuel L. Jackson, don't apply to a digital submission. However, these skills are more relevant than ever, because what's interesting about this creative advice is that in-person auditions are almost becoming a process of and from the past. All the points that Samuel L. Jackson is sharing are absolutely accurate, only now, all of these skills have transferred to the self-tape. Ironically, it could be argued that there is just as much creative and technical feedback in submitting a self-tape for consideration, as there ever was in auditioning in-person. Still talent feedback remains steadfast, because the majority do miss the visceral experience of auditioning in-person. To those talent, consider this, casting in-person usually involved a standard three takes, possibly four if the casting director suggested it. When self-taping, talent can shoot as many takes as they wish. Still, there are no guarantees, and if there was a creative positive to arise from Covid19, it may reflect the new norm for in casting, that the vast majority of all auditions are now expected to be a self-tape. Some talent may agree or disagree, that feeling the creative pressure to have wanted to nail their performance by the third take, may now be a creative anxiety of the past. Either way, both methods still require the same degree of preparation, mindset, versatility, energy, focus, presentation, dialect, wardrobe, audio and range. Nail these ten skills, set and forget, because now, the decision is in the hands of the casting director, irrespective of the in-person or self-tape audition comparison. Let's get you Self-Tape READY.

Earning the Pause: The Power of Active Listening

Q. I'm worried that if I really listen to my scene partner, I'll lose my place or forget my next line. How do I stay in the moment without 'blanking'? A. Absolutely, and that's an excellent question. Earning the pause, per se, can also be very effective just by active listening. By us listening, not to specific words, but to the meaning those words reflect, suddenly, we aren't so concerned about 'impact' as we now are about 'being' in that moment. Yes, we may forget our next line, because many aren't used to active listening. However, there is a silver lining that comes with active listening too, and that is, the more we practice active listening, the less chance of us hijacking our next line, because we were actively listening to our co-actor, or our reader. Remember, it's what's not being said, through our eyes and our body language, that can hold far more 'impact' than what we do say. Celebrate the meaning behind the line, and we will enhance our performance tenfold. Learn Active Listening HERE.

Luck vs. Talent: Which one Wins?

Q. How much of a role does 'luck' actually play in booking an acting role? A. That's an excellent question, and while looks and charisma can take us far, talent is also an unmistakable factor in the process of casting and auditioning, including job interviews. Many may disagree, however; luck can play an enormous role in booking acting work and non-acting work too. There are strong competing elements like responsiveness, presentation, consistency, familiarity, self-tape quality and industry standards, attitude, books down, framing, eye-line, audio, visual, vocals and list can go on. The good news is, consistency is something we can control, unlike the decision making process. If we choose to demonstrate our consistency, it may not guarantee a booking immediately, however; the Casting Director will take note of it. Luck can be inspired by the hard work we apply within the consistency we deliver upon each self-tape. Apologies for sounding cliché, although very little is usually ever achieved without hard work, dedication and persistence. Just because a talent earns a house-hold name status, doesn't mean they also hadn't dedicated two-three decades of hard work before we actually learned who they are and what they do. By knowing what we want, and by taking all the right steps to make it happen, there will never be any guarantees, although, anything is possibly if we apply our body, our mind and our spirit, and stay consistent. Just be very prepared to work hard, very, very hard, and stay hungry, humble and grateful for all opportunities that present themselves. Are you ready to master your consistency? Book your coaching session HERE.

Should I submit a 'Wild-card' take? Self-Tape Strategy for Actors.

Q. Should I submit a 'Wild-card' take if the Casting Director didn't specifically ask for one?
A. The short answer? Follow the casting brief first.

As a professional acting coach online and in-person, it would always be my option to make or produce a 'wild-card' or 'safety' take for myself, however; only submitting it upon request, like a 'back-up' take.

So, yes, produce a 'wild-card' take, if we remember, pre-Covid19, when we would be asked by the Casting Director, in-person, the following, "That was great, but can you do one more for us like this please?"...

This is where the introduction of the self-tape has proven to be a creative blessing.

Could it be argued that there is far more creative agency in producing a 'wild-card' take, just in-case the Casting Director does request one?

That also doesn't mean to suggest that we force this concept down the throat of the Casting Director, just because we believe they should want to view it.

Casting Directors are extremely busy people, and all that they ask, is for talent to follow their casting brief instructions, nothing more, nothing less.

Even film-makers are known for shooting one more take for 'safety'.

That doesn't mean, that one one take for 'safety' will end up being the 'print', or the one featured in the final cut.

So yes, be inspired to produce more than one take for your next self-tape, and then, perform your own casting, by choosing the one take that best illustrates the casting brief instructions.

If the Casting Director wants to see more, they will ask for more, usually either via the talent agent or directly, if the the talent is freelance.

Master the art of following the casting brief instructions, and you won't have to be concerned about submitting a 'wild-card' take in future.

The "How-To" Approach

Q. How can I improve my self-tape quality and booking rate for Brisbane and interstate casting calls?
A. By earning the familiarity of the Casting Director.

That's an excellent question, because at Brisbane Acting Classes, we help our acting students work towards being the actor for hire.

We do this by helping them elevate their acting career in Brisbane and online, and there's no acting experience needed.

This is because acting isn't only for actors, and now, we've officially launched three new specialised coaching services at Self-Tape Studio Brisbane!

Acting itself, is all about finding and exploring our own actor for hire in our self-confidence.

This can happen in ways we may not have even know was there in the first place, especially without having explored our own creative potential in a fun, dynamic and supportive space.

Q. From a parent's point of view, do students require previous acting experience to join?
A. The short answer is no.

At its core, creative performance is open to everyone. Acting classes in Brisbane for teens is a brilliant way for young people to find their creative flare.

We help our acting students open their creative door to self-expression, self-confidence and self-awareness. The best part? Online Self-Tape Reader

Q. Is it ok to use an AI reader or a pre-recorded track for my self-tape?
A. You can, however, nothing can beat the natural delivery of a human reader, especially a professional reader.

From an online self-tape reader perspective, this is an excellent question, because yes, the Casting Director is usually focused on the talent they can see.
That doesn't mean to suggest however, that the same Casting Director isn't also subject to distraction, or they immediately compare our self-tape with the extraordinary reel they just viewed before viewing ours, because Casting Directors are only human too.
If AI is bad, or even if our reader sounds unnatural too, it won't make one ounce of difference how great our self-tape is.
This is because our self-tape must be made, not only to grab attention from the beginning, it must also be good enough to maintain the attention of our audience, more importantly.
The only way to circumvent this practise, which is also completely out of the control of the average professional auditioner, let alone an amateur, is the sobering notion that can bind both professional and amateur auditioners, alike.
The hypothetical possibility that the powers that be, no matter how good or bad the AI or the self-tape itself, may or may not be, it was our look that booked us for the work.
A strong recommendation, don't rely on that theory.
Yes, it can and probably does happen, even a lot more than we may all be aware, however, don't let that be our motivation for using bad AI or making a self-tape that we know we could have made far better than the final cut we submitted for consideration.
Consider each self-tape we make, to be a creative opportunity to design how we might go about producing this reel.
This is because, every self-tape can be entirely different, just like the project that our role plays in casting for the part we find ourselves self-taping for within it

What to Look for in Brisbane Acting Classes: Technical Self-Tape Training.

A. How do I choose an acting class that includes self-tape technical training?

Q. Its always best to contact the acting school first & confirm that their acting classes, workshops, modules or units specifically include technical training.

Usually, the creative component is a given. This is equally interesting, as more and more actors are are finding value in making high-quality self-tapes for Casting Directors, Employers and Clientele.

This can reflect an intersting challenge, attempting to find an acting class or school that focuses on the technical & creative aspects for the professional auditioner.
Truth be known, there also isn't too much online that doesn't cover or discuss what the self-tape actor needs to know about making a 'clean' self-tape for acting work.
For an interpersonal approach, Acting Classes Brisbane, does aim to bridge this gap, because we offer online, in-person & in-studio 1/1 & group classes.
Granted, our creative screen performance classes are not accredited, however; our acting classes will give acting students industry relevant tips, hints & practical advice & guidance on the creative & technical sides of self-tape making & screen performance
